Yuichiro Nei writes:

Mr.Tanaka says he is "health conscious" and he gets a lot of information about staying trim, energetic and healthy. But he gets too much information to recognize what is most important for him. So, his doctor must tell him what information is most important.

To give him correct imformation, his doctors has many things to do. Before thinking of what is important for him, we must think about his condition. And think about what he must do. Second, we need to answer his questions and give correct information about health and nutrients. From talking with him, he has many problems. First, he takes unbalanced nutrition. For example, he eats mainly beef and pork mainly and he really hates most vegetables and take vitamins from vitamin supplements. And he must avoid junk foods. Taking much junk foods causes high levels of LDL in the blood. Udon and rice contains little fibers. So his habit of diet cause lack of fiber and take much cholesterol. So doctors must tell him to eat more vegetables or drink vegetable juice.

Second, he has a genetic risk of diabetes. This suggests he has much risk of having diabetes than other people, so he must avoid taking too much sugar. And he must try moderate exercise reularly (for example walking more than 30 minutes a day).

Third, his LDL level is 172. It is very high and cause to many diseases, for example, heart diseases. Moderate exersise also good for bringing down LDL, doctors tell him to exercise regularly. And that would also good for refresh his mind. He said he wants to take high protein food, but he eats meats which contain much fat. To take much protein and bring down his LDL level, he had better eat boiled or roasted fish, not fried fish.

Finally, we doctors need to answer his questions. First, doctors must tell him the RDA of vitamins and minerals for a man of his age. The RDA of vitamin A for his age is 2000IU (This is the amount of 1/4 of carrot.) RDA of vitamin B1 is 1.0 mg. (It's about 114g of soy bean.) RDA of vitamin C is 50mg (a middle size potato.) RDA of vitamin D is 100 IU (26g of tuna). And RDA of iron is 11mg, that of calcium is 600mg, and that of magnesium is 300mg. Second second question is about carbohydrates which come from sugar and fats from fatty acids (monounsaturated, polyunsaturated, saturated fatty acids) and glycerol. There is real difference between carbohydrates and fats.

About vitamin supplements, these are good for support when the body lacks vitamins, but taking many vitamin supplements is not good, because this might cause a lack of fibers and minerals. Vitamins and minerals help keep you in good condition.

Everyone needs to exercise, not only for keeping weight down. To exercise is good for lowering the risk of diabetes and high levels of LDL in his blood. We need to tell Mr. Tanaka the risk of high levels of LDL in blood. (This is a cause of arteriosclerosis and heart attacks.)

And last, we need to give him basic advice for keeping his health in good condition. First, he must eat breakfast. (Good breakfast makes your brain and mind clear in the morming, so you can work well in the morning from eating breakfast.) Second, he must check his LDL once a month. Third, he ought to exercise moderately 30 minutes a day. (If peaple can't continue hard exercise, over 30 mimutes of basic exercise is good for bringing down LDL in the blood.) Fourth, he needs to eat more vegetables to take fibers, vitamins and minerals. So he must pay attention to more points to keep his health good.
