Kousaku Komiya writes:
There are many people who is very busy with their business. Mr. Tanaka,
one of them, he is "health-conscious". He once read many different
magazines and internet sites to stay current with the latest
information about staying trim, energtic and healthy. But, recently,
he is very busy with his computer business, he's finding it difficult
to follow all the recent information on good eating and healthy
lifestyle patterns. Therefore, he is very confused about what would be
the recommended daily amounts of vitamins and minerals for a man his
age. It's good that he is "health-conscious ". But, I think it's not
good to be health-conscious more than necessary. Mr.Tanaka is like
that. So, he is eager to read many different magazines, etc.... Then, it's
no wonder that he is confused, because there is much incorrect
information by nonexperts.
Another problem is that Mr. Tanaka doesn't have
time to eat breakfast most morning, and he relies on vitamin
supplements instead of vegetables. It's better to have vitamin
supplements than not to do, however, this is apt to be non-balanced.
On the other hand, the natural foods like vegetables and fruits
contain various vitamins, it's better than vitamin supplements. And,
he exercises for only about a half an hour once a week, it's very
little. In addition, his medical records indicate a few other issues.
Both his grandfather and father have diabetes. His grandmother is
currently ill with a critical heart condition.
First, Mr. Tanaka should
know the real difference between carbohydrates and fats etc...,
because he is confused about different information. The energy
liberated from each gram of carbohydrate as it is oxidized to carbon
dioxide and water is 4.1 Calories and that liberated from fat is 9.3
Calories. When carbohydrates are metabolized with oxygen, for each
molecule of oxygen consumed exactly one carbon dioxide molecule is
formed. This ratio of carbon dioxide output to oxygen usage is called
the respiratory quotient, and therefore the respiratory quotient for
carbohydrates is 1.0. On the other hand, when fat is oxidized in the
body's cells, on average only 70 carbon dioxide molecules are formed
for each 100 molecules of oxygen consumed. Therefore, the respiratory
quotient for the metabolism of fat averages 0.70. In a similar manner,
when proteins are oxidized by the cell, the average respiratory
quotient is 0.80. The reason for these lower respiratory quotients for
fat and protein than for carbohydrates is that a large share of the
oxygen metabolized with these foods is required to combine with the
excess hydrogen atoms present in their molecules so that less carbon
dioxide is formed in relation to the oxygen used. Therefore, the more
fats he takes, the more exercises he needs, however, he is very busy
and not have enough time to exercise. So, he should take carbohydrates
which is lower calories than fats. In addition, he should eat foods
that are richer in fiber. Fiber has been shown in the studies to help
reduce the rates of some forms of cancer, namely colon and breast
cancer.
Certain kinds of fiber have been found to lower levels of
cholesterol in the blood. A number of foods are good sources of fiber,
including fruits, vegetables, legumes, nuts, and whole grains. He get
his fiber from eating udon and rice now, but these foods don't
contain much fiber. Fruits, nuts, and vegetables like green peas
contain more fiber than cereal such as udon and rice. Additionally,
Mr.Tanaka should take balanced-vitamin, especially, it's important for
him to take vitamin B12. Because he is a computer specialist, he
watches his computer on the job, and then his eyes are weakened. Vitamin
B12 helps maintain healthy eyes. Doctors should advise him about the RDA of
B vitamins, etc. -- he can take these from eating liver or oysters,
etc..., RDA of vitamin A is 2000IU -- he can take this from eating a quarter of a
carrot, or butter; and RDA of calcium is 600mg -- which he intake when he drinks
milk (600g).
And, Mr. Tanaka needs more exercises not only to keep his weight
down but also to keep his health in good condition. You should do moderate
exercises for more than 30 min. Now he is want of exercises, and to
make matters worse, there is every possibility of his being affected
by diseases that he has high genetic risk. Both his grandfather and
father have diabetes, and his grandmother is currently ill with a
critical heart condition. So, it's necessary for him to reduce his LDL
so as not to be affected by these diseases. The low LDL level make his
condition better, especially, prevent atherosclerosis, diabetes and so
on. After all, It's necessary to take more exercises, have more
balanced-diet, and obtain only correct information.
