Shusaku Miyamoto writes:
Mr and Mrs Mine are in their late 20s. And each has a job. They usually skip
breakfast or if they have time, they'll fry some foods left over from the day
before. Late at night, they share fast food that Mr M picks up on his way home,
for example pizza, yakitori, chinese noodles with eggs, pork and chicken. And
both have high levels of HDL, Mr M's is 170 and Mrs M's is 165. In addition,
they do not do exercise.
Mr M usually eats hamburger or fried chicken or fried fish for lunch. He works
late. What is worse, he has high blood pressure and occasionally experiences
angia chest pains. Additionally, he is a heavy smoker. He gets too much cholesterol
and fat. Excess cholesterol and unsaturated fat collect in the linings of blood
vessels, forming fatty deposits called plaque. Over time, blood vesseles may become
clogged, reducing the blood flow and oxygen supply to the heart muscle.
Without sufficient oxygen to the heart, chest pain called "angina" develops,
or if the blood supply is cut off, there is heart muscle injury and a "heart attack",
possibly resulting in sudden death. And his low HDL levels is also a risk for
heart disease. The key for his healthy life is to reduce LDL and fat and to gain HDL. So he should reduce fried foods and smoking, if possible, quitting smoking.
Mrs M eats her dinner alone, and very often her dinner is a combination of snack food
and sandwiches, especially cheese or eggs and butter or margarine on the bread. Besides,
when Mr M comes home, she has dinner again with him. And Mrs M is 10 kilos overweight
but she does not understand why she is overweight. Most women in her
family are thin, but several aunts and her mother have developed complications with
various cancers, including cancer of the breast. She should reduce fat, butter and margarine.
Too much fat can increase the risk of heart disease, obesity and other health problems.
What is worse, she has a family history of breast cancer. She must take care more than others.
There are several points to change in the Mines' lifestyle. They should have breakfast
constantly, because breakfast wakes the brain smoothly. But the energy of the brain is only
carbohydrates, so it is better to have breakfast. And they should not eat food left over from
the day before by frying. Since they have high LDL levels, they should have fat as little as
possible. And I want them to reduce or to quit eating fast food that Mr M picks up
on his way home, for example pizza, yakitori, chinese noodles with eggs, pork and
chicken. What is more, they have to eat vegetables. Their diet lacks some vitamins and
something which they can get from vegetables. They have too few vegetables. Lack of vitamin A weakens the mucous membranes of the mouth, nose, throat and lungs, thereby increase susceptibility to infections. Foods rich in beta carotene will help reduce the risk of lung cancer and certain oral cancers. And vitamin C helps the immuno functions. Therefore if they do not have enough vegetables, they may be easily infected. And enough exercise is indespensable for them.
