Satoko Hashiguchi writes:
There are some bad points that both Mr and Mrs Mine (M) share in their life style.
1. Because Mr and Mrs Mine (M) work hard, both of them are not very careful about what they eat.
2. Monday through Saturday they usually skip breakfast or if there's time, they'll fry some food left over from the day before.
3. When Mr M comes home late at night, both Mr and Mrs M share fast food that Mr M picks up on his way from the office -- pizza, yakitori or Chinese noodles with eggs, pork and chicken.
In this life style, they are lacking vegetables and fruits. They intake too many fats.
More specific, there are some bad points that Mrs Mine needs to change in her life style.
1. At lunch Mrs M eats a simple meal, usually a bowl of rice with some meat (usually beef or pork) and a sweet dessert, cake, cookies or ice cream.
2. Since Mr M works late, Mrs M eats her dinner alone, and very often her dinner is a combination of snack food and sandwiches -- she especially likes cheese or eggs and butter or margarine on her bread.
3. Mrs M has both high HDL and LDL levels; her LDL is 165.
4. She is more concerned about her appearance than her health. She cannot understand, for example, why she is 10 kilos overweight, since she eats only two meals a day. But even if she continues with her dietary pattern and her lack of exercise, she does not think she will gain more weight.
5. Several aunts and her mother have developed complications with various cancers, including cancer of the breast.
With regard to these points, if she continues her lifestyle, she may suffer from cancer because of her family history. To prevent such diseases, she needs to change her likes and dislikes. For example, she should change her dinner from sandwiches to traditional Japanese style dinner, rice, miso soup, fish, tofu, and so on. And she should stop taking sweets after lunch. Instead of sweets, taking fruits is much better.
There are also some bad points Mr M should change in his life style.
1. Mr M's lunch is usually a hamburger or fried chicken or fried fish.
2. Mr M has high blood pressure and occasionally experiences angina chest pains.
3. Mr M has no opportunity to do regular exercise.
4. Mr M is a heavy smoker.
5. Mr M has low levels of HDL but his LDL level is 170.
Because his LDL level is very high and he is a heavy smoker, he may suffer from lung cancer in the future. He also has the risk of heart disease. To prevent these diseases, he needs to change his lunch from hamburger to traditional Japanese style lunch, for example, teishoku. And he needs to stop smoking.
The worst point is that both of Mr and Mrs M are not taking much care of their dietary patterns. If they take more care of their life style and change it, they can become healthier. The advice to them follows.
1. They should not skip their breakfast.
2. They should take more kinds of foods, because taking variety of foods leads to balanced diets.
3. They should take more vegetables and fruits to intake fibers and vitamins.
4. They should do more exercise.
